The Times We Keep: BUSY TIME

Updated: Apr 4

As we enter the first full week of Lent, I want to share a short devotional I originally wrote in 2024. It feels especially timely as I continue reflecting on humility and the pace we keep. These themes are also central to the book club I'm leading: The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry. If you would like to join us this season, you are welcome at any time. Register to attend.

Embracing Humility

In this week’s reflection, we are challenged to pause and consider the story of the Good Samaritan. How often have I been like the one who passes by in a moment of need? It’s a thought-provoking question. I’m challenged to be generous with my time, treasures, and talents, both when it’s convenient and when it’s not.

The Challenge of Generosity

How do I ensure I am not like the religious leaders who were too pious to lend a hand? One way is through the practice of humility. Over the past year, I’ve held on to this word like a shiny gold coin. It’s a treasure that I don’t inherently possess, and I’m only beginning to see its value. The more I understand the worth of humility, the more I recognize how much I need to learn.

The Nature of Humility

The word humility challenges me every time I look at her. She is quick to respond, quick to listen, and quick to obey. Prepared for what lies ahead, she’s ready to move, willing to stop, and gracious enough to give with open hands.

Humility leads with listening and serves others. She reflects light both day and night. She understands the art of hiding in the shadow or taking center stage when needed. Humility always focuses on the work of God, and out of His heart, she lends her hand. She does not hide but courageously gives of the blessings she possesses.

The Importance of Reflection

As we navigate our busy lives, it’s crucial to take moments for reflection. How often do we rush past opportunities to help others? This week, I encourage you to pause and think about how you can embody humility in your daily interactions.

Practical Steps to Cultivate Humility

  1. Practice Active Listening: When someone speaks to you, give them your full attention. This simple act shows respect and fosters connection.

  2. Be Generous with Your Time: Offer your time to help someone in need. Whether it’s volunteering or simply being there for a friend, your presence can make a difference.

  3. Reflect on Your Actions: At the end of each day, take a moment to reflect on your interactions. Did you act with humility? How can you improve tomorrow?

  4. Seek Guidance: Don’t hesitate to ask for help or advice. Recognizing that you don’t have all the answers is a sign of strength, not weakness.

Prayer

As I consider the Good Samaritan, help me to walk the steps you have laid out with enhanced focus. Yet, may I not be so single-minded that I forget to honor you or those you’ve placed in my path.
