Have you ever been in a relationship with someone who does all the talking? You might spend two hours at dinner, and if you're lucky, in the last ten minutes, your companion might say, “Oh, and how are you doing?”
As a coach who incorporates the Freedom Framework™ in my practice, I’ve learned that God deeply desires to communicate creatively and personally with His children. Over the past three years, I’ve been practicing listening prayer, but it wasn’t until recently that I gave myself permission to fully engage in conversations with God—asking Him questions and intently listening for His response.
Looking back, I realize I’ve spent many moments with God doing all the talking, missing the opportunity to receive His loving touch. I’m grateful for the printed Word of God and regularly seek direction from it, but I’ve also discovered the beauty of sitting at the table with Him, conversing about everyday happenings and posturing myself to receive His words and His presence.
Is it possible for God to speak to you on demand? Absolutely. While I have countless stories of Him showing up and speaking in miraculous ways, don’t just take my word for it—take His!
Here’s what God’s Word tells us:
John 8:47a - Whoever is of God hears the word of God.
John 10:27 - My sheep hear my voice; I know them, and they follow me.
Jeremiah 33:3 - Call to me, and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know.
Psalm 32:8 - I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my eye upon you.
When you begin to hear and see Him for yourself, you’ll be amazed at His loving whispers and His desire to speak to you. So, how do you begin? It starts with the practice of stopping. In our fast-paced society, that might be one of the hardest things to do, but His Word reminds us: Be still, and know that I am God. (Psalm 46:10a) Today, I’m stopping to dine with Him. There’s room at the table for you too. I wonder what He’ll say!
