8 Questions to Ask God as You Enter a New Season

At the start of a new year, or any new season, I try to be intentional about seeking God’s direction and wisdom for what lies ahead. It’s easy for me to rush forward with my own plans, but I’ve learned I feel far more grounded when I slow down and invite God into the process.

Actually, invite isn’t quite the right word.

What I’ve come to realize is that I’m most grounded when I surrender and accept His invitation to partner with what He is already doing in my life.

One way I do this is through listening prayer. It’s a practice of slowing down and paying attention. I’m still learning how to do this, and I’m often surprised by the different ways God speaks. Sometimes it’s through Scripture. Sometimes it’s a quiet nudge, a word, or a sense of clarity that comes as I sit and listen.

As you begin your next season, I encourage you to pause and start with gratitude. Notice where God has already been present in your life. From that place, consider asking one or two of the questions below. You don’t need to rush. Just listen and stay open to what surfaces.

I’ve grouped these into two simple areas as a starting point.

Personal Growth

  • What gifts have you placed in me that you want to mature?

  • Is there anything I’m holding onto that is keeping me from moving forward?

  • How do you want me to move ahead in this next season?

  • How can I lean on you more fully?

Healing and Relationships

  • What do you want to heal in me so I can better love and connect with others?

  • Is there anything you want me to do to reflect your love to someone in my life?

  • Are there past wounds that may be limiting how freely I give or receive love?

  • What gifts have you placed in the people closest to me that you want me to notice and nurture?

As you sit with these questions, resist the urge to answer them on your own. Begin with gratitude. Keep your focus on Him and on His love for you. You may not hear anything dramatic or loud, but God’s whispers often bring direction when we’re willing to slow down and listen.
